KnotAWorry ("we", "us") provides GPS boat tracking and alerting at knotaworry.com. This policy explains what we collect, why, and who we share it with.
Information we collect
- Account details: your name, email address, optional mobile phone number, and a hashed password.
- Boat details: the name, make, model, radio ID (MMSI), and photo you add. Location metadata is stripped from uploaded photos.
- Device telemetry: GPS location, heading, battery voltage, cellular signal, and firmware version reported by your KnotAWorry tracker.
- Alert settings: the geofences and alert preferences you configure, and a history of alerts sent.
- Alert contacts: the name, mobile number, and email of anyone you invite to receive your boat alerts, and whether they accepted.
- Technical data: IP address, browser type, and request logs used for security and troubleshooting.
How we use it
We use your information to show your boats on the map, run geofence and battery monitoring, send the alerts you turn on, keep your account secure, and support you. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
SMS alerts
If you provide a mobile number and turn on SMS alerts, we send automated text messages about your boats, such as a boat leaving its geofence or a low tracker battery. Message frequency varies with your boat's activity. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out at any time, or HELP for help. You can also remove your number or turn alerts off in your account.
We do not share your mobile number or SMS opt-in consent with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Your number is shared only with our SMS provider to deliver the messages you asked for.
If you invite someone else to receive your boat alerts, we send them one invitation by text and/or email. They receive nothing further unless they accept, and can reply STOP to any text or use the unsubscribe link in any email at any time. Alert contacts receive only the types of alerts the account holder chooses to share (such as the boat leaving its mooring, water in the bilge, or a low tracker battery), with the boat's position when the alert has one.
Service providers
We share data only with providers that help us run the service:
- Twilio: delivers SMS alerts.
- Resend: delivers emails such as confirmations, password resets, and alert emails.
- Simbase: provides cellular connectivity for trackers.
- Cloudflare and OVHcloud: network security and hosting.
- OpenStreetMap Foundation (Nominatim): turns your boat's approximate location, rounded to about 100 meters, into a nearby place name. No account or device details are sent.
When you set a password, we check it against the Have I Been Pwned breach database. Only the first five characters of a one-way hash are sent, never your password.
We may also disclose information when required by law.
Cookies
We use only the cookies needed to keep you signed in, protect forms, and remember that a browser has signed in to your account before, so that someone else repeatedly guessing your password can't lock you out. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies.
Security and retention
Data is encrypted in transit, and device credentials and passwords are stored hashed. We keep your data while your account is active. When your account is deleted, your boats, telemetry, and alert history are deleted with it. We keep a security log of account activity that contains no location data; when your account is deleted, that log's IP addresses are removed and it is no longer linked to you.
Your choices
You can update your details and phone number in your account settings. To delete your account or request a copy of your data, email support@knotaworry.com.
Changes
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date above and notify account holders by email.
